During this new moon in Sagittarius, I’m reminded of the lunar goddess Artemis. She’s very Sagittarian, isn’t she? Depicted as a huntress standing courageously with her bow and arrow, her sights aimed so intently on some far off point undistracted by the mundane details of what’s going on in the scenery that surrounds her.
Artemis is a maiden goddess associated with the new and waxing crescent moon. She is clean, virginal and somewhat naïve, but in her naivety and innocence she retains a very pure sense of morality and righteousness that allows her to live freely within the natural laws laid out so plainly by Mother Earth and the cosmos.
As a huntress, Artemis doesn’t forcibly claim dominion over the animals, terrorizing and slaughtering them as some sort of sick trophy. Artemis has a deep and profound respect for and connection with the animals of the hunt. She works in harmony with her animal brothers and sisters, earning their trust and their respect through her pure and devotional intentions. Her connection with the animals that walk along side her is so strong that she when calls on them for their assistance during times of need they come eagerly and willingly to her aide.
As a goddess of nature, wild and untamed, she shows us there is a natural order that governs all, and to be in alignment in that order is to have dominion and control over one’s own destiny.
New Moon in Sagittarius: A Crossroads
The new moon in Sagittarius takes place during the early morning hours on Tuesday, November 29th. The new moon phase lasts roughly three days surrounding the time in which the moon comes into its exact conjunction with the sun. The new moon is a period of letting go of that which no longer serves us from the preceding lunar cycles. It is a time when the veil is quite thin and our connection to the other realms becomes much more potent. The new moon is not an appropriate time to initiate new actions; however it is an excellent time for introspection, formulating plans, and seeding intentions for the month that follows. For women in particular, now is a time when our physical energy is at it's lowest. It is powerful time when our psychic and intuitive abilities are heightened. To sum it up, the new moon is the perfect time to go inward to surrender and reflect on the past while seeding intentions for the future.
This new moon will take place at 7 degrees in the fiery and adventurous sign of Sagittarius. Similar to Artemis, Sagittarius is depicted as the heroic archer, focused intently on the direction in which his arrow is headed. This image provides a visual demonstration of Sagittarius’s intense and expansive focus on the bigger picture and the broader, more fantastic goal. Now is a time when we can seed more expansive, optimistic intentions for the future. This is a new moon when we need to think in broad strokes, focusing on larger and more ambitious goals
With this new moon taking place at the halfway point between Rahu and Ketu, or the north and south nodes, we are arriving at a crossroads between the comfortable embrace of our past experiences and the excitement and anxiety of the newly uncovered path that lies ahead. This energy can have us clinging desperately to the trappings of our past or flinging ourselves head first into the exciting new possibilities of the future without any regard for what got us this far in the first place.
With the square to Neptune and the south node in Pisces, there’s a danger here of reverting to escapism, addictions, fantasy, illusion, deception, martyrdom and victimhood— all of which can bog us down and prevent us from fully moving forward into the new, expansive vision we’ve created for our future. On the other hand, with this lunation squaring the north node in Virgo, there’s a danger of becoming too practical, pragmatic, realistic, unimaginative, repressed, withholding, and cautious— all of which can provoke anxiety about our future path. The key to resolving these opposing energies is to find the middle path, which points us to that Artemis energy we discussed with the new moon in Sagittarius.
One of the Sagittarius keywords is adventure. Out of all twelve astrological signs, Sagittarius is the least likely to fear the unknown. Coming into this new moon we’re all being faced with the prospect of moving in a direction that feels unfamiliar to us. Like Artemis, we’re at a young, virginal stage of a new cycle in which we are seeing things in a new light, with a fresh sense of innocence and naivety intact. In order to navigate this new path, we must call on the gifts of our past experiences without losing sight of what lies ahead. We must move forward optimistically and courageously, but with the understanding that, at this point in our journey, we can’t fully grasp what it will take to walk this path successfully.
