Well, we’ve officially made it! It’s 2017! We’re a little over a week into the new year and already things feel different. This is the year of the “Fire Rooster,” similar in imagery to the phoenix rising from the ashes— appropriate as we move out of the paradigm-shattering energy of the numerological “9” year of endings and into the numerological year of 1, characterized by rebirth and new beginnings.
In line with this fiery initiatory energy, this coming year is looking to be especially powerful for the fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) as well as those with Sun/Moon/Rising or many personal planets in the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn). The big months in the astrology this year are looking to be March/April as well as August, with some interesting energy finishing out the end of the year in November/December.
On an individual and collective level, change is abound and it feels like we’re all in a race this year scrambling to get our ducks in a row before the cold harsh winter sets in. There is a lot of optimism and inspiration in the air, fueling some major potential for positive change and opportunity. Luckily, many of us will be lit up with the energy and passion necessary to see it all through. The fiery, cardinal energy of this year is bound to move quickly, and 2017 may be over before we all know it! Be sure to use this energy wisely while it’s still here and channel some of those remaining Saturn-in-Sagittarius vibes to take the time to do things correctly, putting in the slow-and-steady effort required to complete our largest, most optimistic goals for 2017 and beyond.
To assist in navigating the powerful energy of the year ahead, I’ve provided a basic rundown of all of the key dates and transits (along with interpretations) for 2017. Enjoy :)
Post-retrograde January is actually looking pretty nice, with all planets both direct and moving forward in the sky from January 9th onward. This is a potent time of opportunity and forward momentum that lasts through February 5th & 6th when Mercury becomes invisible and Jupiter goes retrograde. Now is the time to begin moving on New Years intentions and plans that have been seeded during the Mercury’s three week retrograde through Capricorn/Sagittarius which began mid-December 2016.
January 8th- Mercury stations direct at 28 degrees Sagittarius at 3:05pm MT.
January 12th- Full Moon in Cancer at 22 degrees Cancer/Capricorn at 4:34am MT: This full moon will occur as part of a Grand Cardinal Cross between the Sun in Capricorn, Moon in Cancer, Uranus in Aries, and Jupiter in Libra (highlighting the Jupiter/Uranus opposition that ushered us into 2017 and will remain active through the fall of this year). The Cardinal signs are all about initiation and new beginnings, and this tricky configuration seems like an appropriate way to kick off this “1” year of the Fire Rooster. Squares & Grand Crosses can certainly prove challenging, but they provide us with the necessary energy and motivation to take action where it’s needed most.
February 6th- Jupiter goes retrograde at 23 degrees Libra where it will continue moving backward in the skies until June 9th, 2017 at 13 degrees Libra. Jupiter retrograde marks a time when the optimistic, expansive nature of Jupiter becomes internalized. The focus shifts away from the physical expansion of opportunities and resources and onto our deeply held values and beliefs. In Libra, the philosophical and internalized nature of retrograde Jupiter is expressed through examination of our beliefs about balance, harmony, justice, relationships, and beauty.
February 11th- Partial Lunar Eclipse at 22 degrees Leo: While still very powerful, this eclipse is a little wonky as the karmic lunar nodes are still transiting the Virgo/Pisces axis. This energy is more of a preview of that which is yet to come beginning in May when the nodes ingress into Leo/Aquarius and again in August when we experience a Partial Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius followed by the big one— a full Solar Eclipse in Leo visible across the entire continental United States.
This first eclipse of the year represents a resolution of inner conflict and will be felt most intensely by the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius). Eclipses represent very fated, karmic turning points and often coincide with major endings and new beginnings in the areas of our lives and charts where the eclipse will be taking place.
February 26th- Solar Eclipse at 8 degrees Pisces: This powerful lunar cycle beginning with the New Moon/Solar Eclipse in Pisces marks the resolution/culmination point of the energy that was seeded at the lunar eclipse in Virgo which took place near the beginning of September 2016. This Lunar eclipse is also in close conjunction with Neptune, highlighting the South Node/Neptune conjunction from mid-November 2016 (election time). With this powerful conjunction came a massive, collective disillusionment. This is when the rose colored glasses fully came off and we were eventually much better able to see through the veil of deception into the truth of the issues at hand. Now that we’ve spent the past year dealing with S. Node in Pisces themes of letting go of that which no longer serves us in the way of deception, illusion, escapism, and martyrdom, this powerful lunation gives us a clean slate and shows us what we can begin to build within the space that’s been cleared for us in the Pisces area of our charts and lives.
March is certainly a month to watch, especially if you have your Sun/Moon/Rising in Aries or have a particularly heavy Aries influence in your chart. This month will be particularly powerful and turbulent for the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) and may bring unexpected benefits to us all. The beneficial energy this month is particularly strong for the fire signs (Aries, Leo & Sagittarius). This is also where things may start to get a bit dicey as we come into a ton of Uranus action, sparking internal frustration and external change on both a personal and collective level.
March 3rd- Jupiter will oppose Uranus for the second time, with Jupiter in retrograde this time around. This transit brings powerful new insights, opportunities and shifts in consciousness on both an individual and collective level. With Jupiter in Libra the mix this transit may be related to opportunities for adventure, travel, or expansion of material wealth. In retrograde, Jupiter is more likely to be expanding on our inner world and our core philosophies and beliefs, which, in turn, may provide opportunity for powerful and unexpected change. There is a risk here of moving too far into the Jupiter side and becoming overly optimistic or placing too much emphasis on the needs of others, and, on the opposite end, there can be a risk of becoming overly headstrong and focused on individual freedom at the expense of our most important relationships. The key to this transit is integrating the two opposites to create a situation in which the change that occurs that serves our own individual expression while at the same time expanding on balance and harmony in our connections with others.
March 4th- Venus goes retrograde at 13 degrees Aries where it will remain moving backward through the skies until April 15th. Venus is in its detriment in Aries and when it moves in retrograde its energy becomes three times more powerful as it is much closer to the Earth at this time. This transit causes us to re-evaluate our close relationships and is often associated with break-ups as well as the revival of old flames. Venus also rules our material wealth and money issues will be up for review at this time. This transit could lead to a reversal in important financial matters, which serves to help us reach our personal financial goals in the long term. This may come in the form of a reversal of debt, a refinancing of some sort, or maybe even a temporary loss that causes us to re-evaluate our budget or our relationship with money. Issues of self-worth will also be up at this time, especially in Aries. Working on letting go of limiting beliefs surrounding feeling worthless, unlovable, ect., may prove especially fruitful at this time. With Venus in Aries, the focus is on our own ego needs and self-interest in relationships for the beginning part of this retrograde until Venus moves into Pisces on April 2nd.
March 17th- Uranus/Eris will come into their third and final conjunction today. Eris is the great revealer who exposes that which is hidden in plain sight— denied, pushed away and ignored. Uranus is the planet of innovation, change and chaos. Joined together in Aries, this combination has the potential to bring out some violent, explosive energy on a global level. On a more personal, internal level, Uranus/Eris brings unusual and unexpected circumstances, insights, and frustrations, which serve to reveal to us where we need to accept and integrate new information about ourselves and the world at large. Eris loves to leave us feeling raw, naked and exposed but please know that when she does this it’s always for our own benefit. This energy will ultimately break up stagnation wherever it is most needed in our lives and bring us many beautiful, powerful gifts to be utilized moving forward. Seeing as this is the third pass of this transit, this energy has the potential to bring us to some sort of resolution point in regards to energy/circumstances that began around mid-June of 2016.
March 30th- Jupiter squares Pluto for the 2nd time with Jupiter in retrograde this time around. This transit brings up issues surrounding the use and abuse of power in a way that challenges us to find a point of resolution. There can be a tendency under this influence to exploit others for personal gain, which can prove incredibly destructive in the long-term. Now is the time to focus on creating better balance in our relationships, especially ones in which we hold positions of authority over others. We also have the opportunity to recognize the ways in which we are being exploited ourselves through our relationships or by those in positions of perceived authority. This energy can feel both intense and expansive, as we break free from old structures and hierarchies that no longer serve us, allowing us to take back our individual and collective power to move into a truly expansive place of greater balance, harmony and justice
April 2nd- Retrograde Venus moves into Pisces. The focus shifts from personal self-interest in relationships to a more collective mindset. Relationships take on a more loving, compassionate nature and emotional connections deepen at this time.
April 9th- Mercury stations retrograde at 4 degrees Taurus at 6:37am MT where it will be moving backward in the skies through Taurus/Aries until May 3rd. The focus of this Mercury retrograde begins with a more grounded focus on material comfort and stability and shifts into a review and re-vision of themes involving action and self-interest after Mercury moves into Aries on April 20th.
April 15th- Venus Moves direct at 4:27am at 26 degrees Pisces.
April 20th- Mercury retrograde moves into Aries.
April 21st- Pluto stations retrograde.
May 3rd- Mercury stations direct in Aries.
May 10th- The nodal axis shifts from Virgo/Pisces into Leo/Aquarius. The North Node (Rahu) moves into Leo while the South Node (Ketu) moves into Aquarius. With the karmic North Node transiting Leo over the next 18 months we’re being called to move into a more heart-centered way of connecting with those around us. During this time many of us will be actively moving away from the social media circus in favor of true, heartfelt connection with those around us. This transit ignites our passions and favors more traditional methods of self-expression over the more detached, voyeuristic approach to engaging with the world that has become so commonplace. While many people may fully embrace this Leo energy (I’m thinking the Pluto-in-Leo baby boomers may dig this shift) others will be found clinging to their ideals for dear life. There’s going to be a lot of energy surrounding the Internet and it’s “appropriate” use (we’re already beginning to see this with the government/media/corporate emphasis on combatting “fake” news), and there is the potential that we may experience more restrictions on our individual freedom of expression during the course of this transit. The upcoming eclipses will highlight and expand on these themes even further.
May 18th- Saturn in Sagittarius trines Uranus in Aries for the second time at 26 degrees. Saturn's trine to Uranus is a relatively rare alignment in which we can invite new, exciting and innovative change which expands on our most integral and optimistic goals without compromising all of the hard work we've already put in to set our plans in motion. This is a time when effort and duty favor individual freedom and expression, and when marching to the beat of a different drummer enhances our ability to bring structure and form to our most far-reaching ambitions. This planetary energy works almost effortlessly on its own, bringing powerful new experiences and insights which can enhance whatever it is we've been building and working toward in the Sagittarius area of our charts and lives. This favorable energy is already in motion (first pass was December 2016) and will be felt for several days before and after the transit goes exact and will come back around for it’s final pass in November of 2017.
Things begin to quiet down a little bit as we move into the summer months, especially when we come into June/July of this year. This is an excellent time to enjoy the relative stability while it’s here and take some time to rest and recover from whatever shifts have been taking place over these last few months.
June 9th- Jupiter stations direct at 13 degrees Libra.
June 15th- Neptune stations Retrograde
Pretty chill with a bit of inner-planet action sprinkled in here-and-there. No major, long-term transits this month, no eclipses.
August 2nd- Uranus stations retrograde at 13 degrees Aries.
August 4th- Jupiter squares Pluto at 17 degrees for the third and final time this year. As this energy reaches a point of resolution, the influence of this transit can feel both intense and expansive as we break free from old structures and hierarchies that no longer serve us, allowing us to take back our individual and collective power to move into a truly expansive place of greater balance, harmony and justice.
August 7th- Partial Lunar eclipse at 16 degrees Aquarius. The lunar eclipse at the time of the full moon calls on us to surrender and transform the areas of our life that are being affected. The lunar eclipse represents a time of endings and letting go of some part of our lives that no longer serves us. This lunar eclipse in Aquarius is about letting go of humanitarian ideals that don’t serve our own personal passions and self-interest. This Full/Moon eclipse shows us where we’re negating close, personal connections in favor of a more voyeuristic and detached approach to engaging with others. This calculated detachment is often used as a defense mechanism against sharing our heart with others in order to avoid feeling vulnerable and exposed. This eclipse also shows us where we may hold a resistance to the ideas and beliefs of others and have become too attached to our own individualistic patterns of thinking.
August 12th- Mercury stations retrograde at 11 degrees Virgo at 11:22pm. Mercury will be moving backward in the skies through Virgo/Leo until September 5th. Potential to revisit unresolved energy left over from Mercury retrograde in Virgo in September 2016. Re-organizing, paying close attention to details, re-visiting health routines and paying close attention to the body/nutrition area all advisable during the Virgo portion of this transit. Tying up loose ends and perfecting the Virgo area of our charts/lives is what this strong Mercury energy will be highlighting.
August 22nd- FULL SOLAR ECLIPSE at 28 degrees Leo visible throughout the entire continental United States. This eclipse represents a major change and transition point in each of our lives. Solar Eclipses represent a point of endings and new beginnings and this time around, in Leo, it brings us to a point where we must ignite our creative passions and share more of our hearts with those around us. The energy of this eclipse calls on us to stop looking to others to tell us what to do, we must follow our own hearts and do what ever it is that keeps our fire burning. It’s about doing what we truly love and sharing THAT with the world.
While I'm not normally one to make global predictions, the fact this this eclipse is visible across the US (the last time this happened was in 1918, just prior to the end of WWI) paired with the eclipse falling within the orb of conjunction with the fixed star Regulus, also known as the "Royal Star" AND noting that the eclipse will fall right on Trumps ascendent... I feel like it's worth mentioning that this eclipse could mark the beginning of a major transition point for the United States.
August 25th- Saturn stations direct in Sagittarius.
August 27th- Jupiter sextile Saturn. Positive influence where expansion, optimism, and creating better balance/harmony/justice supports us in bringing our long-term Saturn-in-Sagittarius efforts to completion with much greater ease.
August 31st- Mercury Retrograde moves back into Leo. Focus shifts toward re-evaluating our passions, desires, the things we love most. Rethinking our plans to make sure we are coming from the heart and following our own inner authority and drive.
September 5th- Mercury goes direct at 28 degrees Leo— highlighting the energy of the solar eclipse that kicked off the lunar month.
September 27th- Jupiter opposes Uranus for the 3rd and final time. This transit brings powerful new insights, opportunities and shifts in consciousness on both an individual and collective level. With Jupiter in Libra the mix this transit may be related to opportunities for adventure, travel, or expansion of material wealth. There is a risk here of moving too far into the Jupiter side and becoming overly optimistic or placing too much emphasis on the needs of others, and, on the opposite end, there can be a risk of becoming overly headstrong and focused on individual freedom at the expense of our most important relationships. This marks the resolution point of a transit that began in December 2016. The key to resolving this transit is integrating the two opposites to create a situation in which the change that occurs that serves our own individual expression while at the same time expanding on balance and harmony in our connections with others.
September 28th- Pluto in Capricorn stations direct.
October 10th- Jupiter moves into Scorpio! Jupiter is known in ancient astrology as the “Great Benefic” which provides ease and good fortune wherever it is transiting in our charts. This year-long transit is particularly beneficial for the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces). We have the green-light now to delve deep into taboo subjects, occult studies, research, money matters, and even to enhance our sexual passions. This is an excellent time for deep exploration of our emotions through therapy, self-reflection or other means. This can be a very exciting and empowering time as hidden fears and power/control issues may come up to be rectified and healed much more easily. Now is a time when we may become more intense and passionate and can really dive headfirst into the things that get us fired up about life. Scorpio knows what it wants and isn’t afraid to do what it takes to get it. This energy may be channeled and focused intensely into uncovering your deepest fantasies and passions and acting on those urges in way that is beneficial. It’s safe to say that we’ll all learn a great deal about ourselves and what makes us “tick” throughout this coming year as Jupiter makes its way through the incredibly deep and intense sign of Scorpio.
November 11th- Saturn trines Uranus for the third and final time at 25 degrees in Sagittarius/Aries. This is a time where many of us may be recognized or rewarded for the completion of all the hard work we’ve been putting in, especially over the course of Saturn’s 2.5 year transit through Sagittarius, which comes to a close in a little over a month. This is almost like the grand finale of this transit, where we can receive unexpected benefits and results for all of the slow and steady progress we’ve made in working toward our most optimistic and expansive goals. This time elicits a feeling of freedom, where we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and celebrate all of our wonderful, hard-earned accomplishments.
Nobember 22nd- Neptune stations direct.
December 2nd- Jupiter trine to Neptune. This beautiful and harmonious transit may bring destined spiritual encounters, expanding on our mystical, psychic selves. The effects of this transit are felt less so on a material level— the influence is much more ethereal. This is an excellent time to seek advice from spiritual teachers or to simply go inward to discover higher wisdom for oneself. This is an excellent time for connecting with others on similar paths, for major shifts and quantum leaps, transcending time and space (if you’re into that sort of things) and for delving into and expanding upon the metaphysical. The veil is thin in a very positive and potentially life-altering way. Basically, this is the ultimate transit for exploring all things “woo-woo.”
December 19th- Saturn officially moves into Capricorn at 10:31pm. Get ready for a 2.5 year-long dose of cold-hard reality. Saturn, the planet governing patience, hard-work, karmic lessons, and time moves into its home sign of Capricorn. While Saturn does well in Capricorn, this a heavy energy that forces us to leave the optimistic and expansive lessons of Sagittarius behind in favor of a more practical, realistic approach to learning our most important lessons and accomplishing our long-term goals. Now, more than ever, is the time to start putting in the work into creating better structure in our lives.
