This year, on the first day of 2018 we will experience the most potent Supermoon of the year. At 7:24pm MST, the Moon will reach its fullest point in its home sign of Cancer— ringing in the New Year with an energy that is fraught with intense emotional experience. This is a great day to spend time doing things that feel most comfortable, taking care of the home, property and family. This energy is also great for nurturing close relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. Today may bring about an emotional catharsis for some, and if this is the case it’s advisable for us all to seek out support from the people in our lives who help us to feel safe and cared for. The Full Moon in Capricorn brings us back into balance after focusing on all of the hard work and responsibility the overtly-Saturnian energy of this month has been centered around thus far.
This powerful full moon is part of a Kite formation which, according to astrological researcher Lynn Koiner, has associated with some pretty intense energy, finding that it oftentimes brings about some form of external crisis. Despite the harmonious aspects involved with all of the beneficial trines and supportive sextiles, the opposition in the Kite formation tends to take on a more predominant role. This time around, the opposition is, as with any Full Moon, between the Moon and the Sun, with the Sun being in a tight conjunction with both Venus and Pluto. With the planets governing relationships, beauty, material pleasure, intensity, death, power struggles and transformation closely involved in this Full Moon, the sense is that some rather intense relationship issues are likely to pull us out of our emotional comfort zones around this time. This energy is further highlighted by the fact that this Sun/Venus/Pluto conjunction forms the very tip of the Kite, indicating that these energies will likely be the focal point.
Luckily, support is offered by Neptune in Pisces as well as Mars and Jupiter in conjunction in Scorpio, forming a Grand Water Trine with the intuitive and nurturing energy of the Full Moon in Cancer. Neptune deepens our intuition, spiritual awareness and compassion all the while Mars and Jupiter in Scorpio assist us in uncovering and expanding on our passions in order to take more creative, decisive and Truthful action moving forward.
With Supermoons in general, emotions and sensitivities tend to become much more heightened, often impacting women much more so than men. The combination of a Supermoon in the emotionally driven sign of Cancer along with the Kite formation and Grand Water trine all point to the fact that paying attention to, and expressing our feelings and emotions will be integral to navigating the energy of this New Year’s Full Moon, especially if doing so causes us discomfort.
As with any Full Moon, this time period also reflects a culmination point of the energy of this lunar cycle, which began with the New Moon in Sagittarius on December 17th. Now is a time to come back into balance, celebrate what’s worked for us thus far, and to release the mishaps, misfortunes, and mistakes that occurred earlier in the month. Even with the intensity surrounding this particular Supermoon, the Full Moon remains a time for celebration, connection, activity and reflection, and this Full Moon is no exception to that rule!
