At a time when so many marriages end in divorce, it’s no surprise that multiple marriages are one of the most common topics I get asked about as an astrologer. It’s currently estimated that the average marriage in the United States lasts only 11 to 14 years, and that 42% of marriages will end in divorce. Pair that with the fact that we’re in a Venus retrograde as I write this, and it’s no wonder I’m getting so many questions. They’re coming from students in my Relationships and Synastry course and the Cosmic Academy of Astrology, and from many of you in the comments on my YouTube channel, all asking about the signatures for divorce and multiple marriages in the birth chart.

In this post, I’m covering the most common indicators for divorce and for multiple marriages, plus the specific areas of the birth chart to look at for each individual marriage. As astrologers, we need a way to tell different marriage partners apart when we give readings. Luckily, your marriages aren’t all piled up in one big glob in your 7th house.

At the end, I’ll show you how all of this works in action with some really fascinating celebrity birth charts.

Start With Divorce

To talk about multiple marriages, we have to talk about the prerequisite for multiple marriages, which is, of course, divorce.

When you evaluate divorce in the birth chart, the first place to look is the 7th house, no matter which marriage you’re on. The 7th house is the house of all your long-term partnerships. It’s the foundation for all of your marriages, and some of its energy will still be reflected in later marriages. Each partner is a different person, though, and each relationship takes on a different flavor. Some of those relationships can be overwhelmingly positive even if your 7th house has some afflictions, so there’s definitely hope if your 7th house looks a little messy.

We still look at the 7th house as the foundation. And if your 7th house doesn’t show divorce, and your partner’s 7th house doesn’t show divorce, there’s no point looking at subsequent marriages. They’re probably not going to happen.

As I mentioned, your second marriage has its own house and its own planetary ruler in your birth chart. So do your third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and so on. Many of the indicators I’m about to cover can be applied to those later marriages, too, using the houses and planets that represent each marriage after the first.

Three Things to Keep in Mind

There’s usually no single placement that shows divorce. Sometimes there is. If a placement is really strong and just screaming, “Hey, this is probably not going to be a good situation,” that can be it. In most charts, though, you need multiple indicators and patterns showing up at the same time to give a strong testimony for divorce and multiple marriages.

There are two people in a marriage. If you’re going to predict something as serious as divorce or multiple marriages, you need to consider both partners’ charts. If one person’s chart shows indicators for divorce that aren’t very strong, and the other person’s chart shows very strong, harmonious energy for a lasting marriage, that lasting energy might overpower the divorce energy. As an astrologer, you have to do your due diligence and weigh the testimonies in each chart to get the full picture.

Sometimes one person’s marriage indicators are much more positive and the other’s are a little dicey or more neutral. That can simply mean the two people are having different experiences, or different levels of happiness, or that the marriage is a little one-sided. It doesn’t necessarily mean divorce. On the flip side, if one chart is on the fence (“eh, some good indicators, some bad, I’m not really sure what I’m seeing here”) and the other chart looks like a divorce, the stronger testimony will probably overpower the weaker one. I teach how to do this in great detail in my Relationships and Synastry course, and you’ll see it play out in the celebrity charts at the end of this post.

Look at every indicator holistically. Say you have Uranus in your 7th house, which is one of the indicators I’m about to cover. If your natal Uranus is in a beautiful grand trine with Jupiter and Venus, and the ruler of your 7th house (the planet that rules the sign on your 7th house) is in really strong essential dignity, that is not an indicator for divorce. What is an indicator for divorce is Uranus in the 7th house with a lot of other chaos going on. Maybe it’s square Mars and Saturn, and maybe there’s additional testimony like the Nodes moving through your 1st and 7th houses, or an afflicted 7th house ruler.

Not all Uranus placements, Saturn placements, or Mars placements are created equal. Even if you have one of these placements, you need to weigh how positive or challenging it is in the context of the whole chart.

Indicators for Multiple Marriages

1. Uranus in the 7th House or Square the Descendant

This is the one I see most commonly, not just in charts with divorce but in charts with multiple marriages. Uranus in the 7th house, or Uranus square the Descendant, is a very common indicator that someone needs a lot of freedom. There can be a lot of ups and downs and turbulence in their relationships, and relationships that begin and end rather abruptly.

Like I said, Uranus in the 7th isn’t a surefire indicator of divorce on its own. It shows that you need freedom and excitement in your relationships, and that things need to feel fresh and new to hold your interest. If Uranus is elevated in some way, or part of a bigger, more beautiful pattern, and there are other testimonies for a long-lasting marriage in your chart, it might not be the be-all and end-all.

2. Uranus Conjunct, Square, or Opposite the Ruler of the 7th House

The second indicator is very similar to the first: Uranus in a conjunction, square, or opposition to the ruler of the 7th house.

By the ruler of the 7th house, I mean the planet that rules the sign occupying your 7th house, or your Descendant sign. And I’m only talking about the seven traditional visible planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. We don’t use modern rulerships for this, in this post or in my courses.

For example, if you’re a Taurus rising, Scorpio occupies your 7th house, so your Descendant is in Scorpio. The traditional ruler of Scorpio isn’t Pluto. It’s Mars. So Mars is the ruler of your 7th house, and Mars describes your marriage. It doesn’t only affect your first marriage, either. To a certain extent, it can shape the energy around all of your later marriages. So Mars is a big player to focus on when you look at relationships in your chart, both natally and by transit. In that example, if you have Mars conjunct Uranus with Scorpio on your 7th house, that’s a very volatile energy, and you’ll sometimes see volatility in relationships as a result.

Uranus is different from some of the other planets I’ll talk about, because it usually indicates more than one partnership. Some of the divorce indicators later in this post are only indicators for divorce, not necessarily for multiple marriages.

3. The North or South Node in the 7th House

This is probably the strongest indicator of actually having multiple marriages and multiple big, important relationships in your life: the North Node or South Node in your 7th house. What I’ve noticed is that the North Node in the 7th can actually be the stronger indicator of volatility and multiple marriages.

When either lunar node sits in your 7th house, your partnerships are very fated. They come in for a reason, and they upend you. They completely change your life and flip it upside down. You start off as one person and end the relationship as a completely different person, with a life that looks nothing like it did before that marriage began.

These relationships have really big beginnings and endings, and they’re very karmic. They feel very synchronistic, especially with the North Node, and you can feel very pulled toward, even obsessed with, the person. Each relationship, each marriage, is meant to show you something and aid in your soul’s growth and evolution.

Which is kind of a crappy thing to hear if you’re in the middle of it. It doesn’t help much when you’re in love with someone and it’s falling apart. But later on, when you look back at the bigger chapters, you’ll see that each partnership taught you something and was destined, and you can feel that in your soul.

Indicators for Divorce

From here, we’re getting into divorce indicators. Again, divorce is the prerequisite for multiple marriages, but these indicators on their own usually aren’t connected to having multiple marriages. That doesn’t mean you won’t marry again if you have one of them. They just aren’t as strong a testimony for subsequent marriages by themselves.

Pluto in the 7th House or Square the Descendant

Pluto in the 7th house doesn’t always indicate divorce. Sometimes it just shows a really intense, really close relationship where you can be very deep, raw, and vulnerable with each other. You’re almost obsessed with one another, and that can be a powerful and beautiful experience.

But if Pluto is in a difficult aspect with other planets, especially Uranus, Saturn, Mars, or the North and South Nodes, it’s a strong indicator for intense relationships with big, intense beginnings and endings. You might be all in on a partnership, and then when it ends, you’re all out. There are various reasons for that you can read deeper in the chart, but for this post, we’re treating it as one indicator.

Just like the first two indicators, Pluto conjunct, square, or opposite the ruler of the 7th house can show a lot of intensity in the relationship. Depending on what the 7th house ruler is, its dignity, its house, and how it relates to other planets in the chart, that could potentially be an indicator for divorce. But Pluto isn’t a strong one unless it’s behaving badly.

Saturn in the 7th House

Then we have another big one: Saturn in the 7th house.

Saturn is traditionally considered a malefic. It stops things and halts progress. It makes things take way more time than you want them to, and it creates roadblocks, challenges, and frustrations. When Saturn is in poor dignity, especially in its fall or detriment in Aries, Cancer, or Leo, it can create a lot of havoc in the 7th house, as the ruler of the 7th house, or in aspect to the ruler of the 7th.

If Saturn is in its exaltation or its home, so in Libra, Capricorn, or Aquarius, it can be quite the opposite. It might show a delay in getting married. Usually that looks like getting married a little later than your peers and comparing yourself to them, or getting married quite early compared to everyone else. Saturn rules age, so it either makes things happen really young, where you take on a lot of responsibility like marriage early on, or it delays things and makes them take more time. You can see which way it’s likely to go, to a certain extent, when you evaluate the whole chart.

For the purposes of this post, just know that Saturn in good dignity doesn’t necessarily mean divorce. That’s especially true if it’s in a trine or other harmonious aspects with other planets, and maybe the ruler of your 7th house is well dignified and doing some really nice things. In that case, Saturn is actually an indicator of stability and longevity. It makes relationships last and stand the test of time, and makes your connection with your partner super, super solid.

I’ve seen this a lot. I’ve done a lot of research on charts of marriages that work really well and last a long time, and on marriages that end really badly or people with many marriages, both for my Relationships and Synastry course and for the module where I teach all this in the Cosmic Academy of Astrology. I’ve seen a lot of really strong, positive Saturn placements in long marriages. I’ve also seen a lot of marriages with really difficult Saturn energy that ended in divorce.

Besides a poorly placed Saturn in your 7th house, you can also look at Saturn square the Descendant, or Saturn conjunct, square, or opposite the ruler of your 7th house.

Mars in the 7th House

Since we just covered one of the two malefics, you can probably guess which planet is next. Yes, it’s Mars.

Mars in the 7th house can be challenging. Mars is the planet of discord, dispute, and separation. It very literally is the separating, cutting principle. So Mars in your 7th house can show a lot of volatility and potentially a marriage that ends in separation.

Again, that’s only the case if Mars is in poor dignity. Mars in its fall in Cancer, or in Taurus or Libra, might not be the best energy. It’s also more likely to cause problems if it’s in a really difficult configuration, like a square with Pluto or some sort of T-square, or if the North and South Nodes are involved and other indicators line up with that Mars energy. But if Mars is, let’s say, exalted in Capricorn and in a grand trine with Pluto and Venus, it’s maybe not going to do that. Take it with a grain of salt and look at it as a whole.

Mars can also cause problems when it’s square the Descendant, or conjunct, square, or opposite the planetary ruler of your 7th house.

The Condition of the 7th House Ruler

Speaking of which, the next thing to evaluate is the ruler of the 7th house itself. Not just whether the planets we’ve discussed are aspecting it, but what kind of dignity it’s in. Is it in its detriment or fall? Its exaltation or rulership? Is it peregrine, or doing something kind of unusual or weird? Is it in challenging aspects with other planets?

All of that matters, because the 7th house literally rules your marriage and your marriage partner. You want to really scrutinize what that planet is doing.

Afflicted Planets in the 7th House

You’ll also want to look at afflicted planets in the 7th house in general. The 7th is the house of your first marriage and the house of marriage overall. So if you have a planet there that isn’t a malefic, isn’t one of the Nodes, and isn’t Pluto or Uranus (let’s say it’s Mercury) but it’s heavily afflicted by other planets or in really poor dignity, that says something. It’s a testimony for potential problems in marriage or for divorce.

The 7th House Ruler in the 6th, 8th, or 12th House

Finally, the ruler of the 7th house in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house (the difficult houses, or malefic houses, in traditional astrology) is very common in marriages that end in divorce or have a lot of difficulty.

In my experience, the 8th house seems to be the most problematic of the three, with the 12th second and the 6th in third place. Having the 7th house ruler in the 8th doesn’t usually cause problems on its own. But if your 7th ruler is in the 8th and you have another indicator, there’s potential for divorce.

Where to Find Each Marriage in the Birth Chart

Like I said, all of these indicators can show up for your later marriages, too.

The 7th house describes your first marriage partner and your energy around marriage and partnership in general. It can literally describe how you meet your partner and the major themes in the relationship. It also describes your marriage partner as an actual human person. The 7th house isn’t you, or at least it’s not only how you engage in relationships. It very literally describes your partner. I have a whole video on the 7th house ruler, the marriage ruler, in the birth chart if you want to go deeper.

A quick example from my own life: my 7th house ruler is Venus, and it’s in my 9th house, the house of long-distance travel, foreign countries, and higher education. I met my husband in college, and we got engaged in a foreign country. We also had a long-distance relationship at the beginning because we lived in different states. Those themes really played out, especially at the start. If you already understand these concepts in your chart, that kind of thing is a huge green flag that, hey, maybe this is something.

Skipping a House for Each Marriage

The 7th house describes your first marriage, how you meet your partner, your partner as a person, and the potential for longevity or divorce. Your 9th house shows all of that for your second marriage partner.

Essentially, you skip a house for each marriage. If you frame it the way you’d frame derivative houses, the 9th is the 3rd from the 7th, then the 11th is the 3rd from the 9th, and so on. It’s not truly a derivative house situation, though. If you’re reading the 9th because it’s the 3rd from the 7th, that kind of implies you’re marrying your husband’s brother or something, and that just doesn’t make a lot of sense. But this technique of skipping a house has been used in Vedic astrology, and I’ve used it very accurately and successfully in many readings. Like I mentioned, I’ve researched this topic heavily for the courses I teach.

So just as the 7th house describes a lot of really important information about your first marriage partner, the 9th house does the same for your second, and it shows whether that marriage is likely to end in divorce. The same goes for the 11th house (third marriage), the 1st house (fourth marriage), and so on for every subsequent marriage.

One important note about later marriages: always look to your 7th house as the foundation. If your 7th house has indicators for multiple marriages, like the Nodes or Uranus, that might still play a role in your second marriage even if the indicators for that marriage look neutral or kind of positive. Pair that with your second partner’s chart, and you’ll get a bigger, more holistic picture of whether the marriage is likely to succeed or end in separation.

Celebrity Chart Examples: Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie

I went through so many examples trying to find one that really illustrated multiple partnerships, since that’s what I wanted to highlight. I landed on Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt. Both of their charts have very strong 7th house and 7th house ruler indicators for divorce and for multiple marriages, and their later marriages also ended in divorce.

I’m using whole sign houses for all of this. That’s what I recommend you do, at least at first, when you’re playing around with marriage and divorce in the birth chart, especially when you’re working with house rulership like we are here.

Jennifer Aniston: The First Marriage

Jennifer Aniston is a Libra rising, so Aries occupies her 7th house.

Right out of the gate, she has Saturn in its fall in her 7th house. That’s not a positive indicator for a good, lasting marriage. It’s an indicator for a lot of challenge. Her Saturn is also very closely conjunct her Descendant. With all of the indicators in this post, the closer a planet in the 7th house is to your actual Descendant, the stronger its influence. So for her, the strongest influence on her marriage is a fallen Saturn suppressing, limiting, restricting, and causing conflict right on the Descendant.

Saturn craves stability, longevity, loyalty, and security in relationships. In Aries, it isn’t going to get that. Aries is ruled by Mars, and Aries is about things that are more abrupt and short-term. Saturn and Aries are in conflict with each other, and that conflict is very present in her marriage.

The second thing in her 7th house is Venus in its detriment in Aries. One of the indicators we covered is a planet in poor dignity in the 7th, and Venus is that planet in her chart. Venus is also the general significator of relationships, so an afflicted Venus is another testimony for potential issues.

And finally, her 7th house has a North Node-Chiron conjunction opposite Uranus and Jupiter. That’s definitely a turbulent energy. As I mentioned earlier, the North Node in the 7th can be a strong indicator for multiple marriages, especially with other indicators for divorce, like Jennifer Aniston has.

The ruler of her 7th house is Mars, and luckily for her, Mars is in its home sign of Scorpio. However, it’s conjunct Neptune. That can indicate not seeing her partnerships very clearly and entering relationships with rose-colored glasses. It can also show lies, deception, or moments of disillusionment in the relationship, where you don’t see it clearly at the start and then realize, oh, I’ve been deceived, or what I thought was true isn’t. I also find it interesting that this conjunction is square her Sun.

If Jennifer Aniston were my client and asked me whether her marriage would last, I might let her down gently, but I’d tell her there are significant indicators for instability and difficulty in marriage. Her chart shows very clear indicators for divorce, especially in the first marriage.

As I’m sure you know, her first marriage was to Brad Pitt. Their marriage was infamous. Brad Pitt took a movie role with Angelina Jolie, there were all sorts of rumors, and then all of a sudden they were divorced and he was dating Angelina Jolie. It turned into a big tabloid extravaganza, which I’m sure was not very fun for Jennifer Aniston.

Brad Pitt: The First Marriage

Even though Jennifer Aniston’s first marriage looks like a very clear divorce in her chart, we still want to look at her partner’s chart. Maybe it shows something different, or adds to the story. In Brad Pitt’s case, it really doesn’t show anything that different. It’s a very strong chart, just like hers, for divorce in the first marriage, with strong potential for multiple marriages too.

Brad Pitt has a Sagittarius Ascendant, so his Descendant is in Gemini. Gemini is a mutable sign, which is traditionally another indicator for multiple marriages. I don’t consider it a strong one, though. If it were, every Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo, and Pisces rising would have multiple marriages and divorces, and that’s just not the case.

His 7th house is empty, but his 7th house ruler says a lot. That’s why empty houses are not a thing. An empty 7th doesn’t mean he doesn’t have marriages. He’s had some very high-profile marriages with a lot of energy around them, and that shows through his Mercury.

He has Mercury in Capricorn in his 2nd house, and what I find most interesting is that it’s very closely conjunct the South Node. That’s another indicator of turbulence and difficulty, and of multiple marriages, which he has experienced. His marriage ruler is also conjunct Mars, the planet of conflict and separation. In this case, though, Mars is exalted in Capricorn, which elevates it in some way, and the whole thing is trine Uranus and Pluto and sextile Chiron. So even though his chart shows indicators for divorce, it suggests he probably got the better end of the deal and that it wasn’t as difficult or turbulent for him. That’s what the tabloids would suggest as well, so I’m going to count that as true.

This stellium is also square Jupiter, which can show going all in or being a bit over the top, especially at the beginning of a relationship. Venus is involved too, and Venus is less problematic since it’s a benefic. So I’d say Brad Pitt’s relationship energy is more of a mixed bag than Jennifer Aniston’s, whose core foundation shows a lot more potential difficulty. Either way, both charts show indicators for divorce, and Jennifer Aniston’s shows definite ones.

Jennifer Aniston: The Second Marriage

Now for the multiple marriages. Back to Jennifer Aniston’s chart. Her first marriage is ruled by Mars and connected to the 7th house. Her second marriage is connected to the 9th house, which is occupied by Gemini, so the ruler of her second marriage is Mercury.

Her Mercury is at 0° Aquarius in a really nice trine with Jupiter, Uranus, and the South Node. That’s a lot better energy than her first marriage. Her second marriage did still end in divorce, and I believe one reason is that she has such strong signatures for challenge, difficulty, and multiple marriages in the foundation of her relationships, the 7th house and its ruler.

It’s hard to say much more without her second husband’s chart. I believe his name is Justin Theroux (I might not be pronouncing that right), and we don’t have his birth time. I’d say that relationship was probably a lot better than her first and probably ended a lot better too. From what I could find online, it seems the split was mutual, they’re still friends, and it ended in a nicer way. But I’d really want to see his chart.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: A Two-Chart Example

What we do have information for is Brad Pitt’s second marriage, to Angelina Jolie. The relationship lasted quite a while, but the marriage ended in divorce, and the divorce proceedings took something crazy like almost eight years to finalize. That’s insane. I’ve never heard of such a thing. It’s a really good example of evaluating two charts to see how a marriage is likely to play out.

Brad Pitt: The Second Marriage

Brad Pitt’s side: His second marriage is in the 9th house, which is occupied by Leo. So the Sun, in Sagittarius in his 1st house, rules his second marriage to Angelina Jolie. His Sun isn’t doing anything that wild. It’s square his Midheaven and IC, which I think is interesting. There could be conflict or challenge around his career, public reputation, or family life brought on by this second marriage, but there are no overt indicators for divorce in that marriage.

When we go back to the foundation of all his partnerships, the 7th house, there’s challenge there, but it’s a mixed bag. We know the marriage ended in divorce, but looking at his chart alone, I’d call it mixed energy that could go either way. It leans a little toward conflict and divorce, especially because of the energy around his 7th house ruler. It really depends on his marriage partner, so I want to see her chart to understand it fully.

Anjelina Jolie: The Third Marriage

Angelina Jolie’s side: For Angelina Jolie, this was her third marriage. I’m not going to get into her first two marriages, or this will turn into a long, crazy chain of marriage connections and charts. We’re just looking at her energy around her third marriage, to Brad Pitt.

Her 7th house is occupied by Capricorn, and that’s the foundation for all her marriages. The ruler of her 7th is Saturn, in its detriment in Cancer, so not well placed, and it’s square Mars, the Moon, and Jupiter. Her baseline energy around partnership shows the potential for divorce, conflict, and difficulty in marriage.

Her second marriage is tied to the 9th house, occupied by Pisces and ruled by Jupiter. Her third marriage, the one to Brad Pitt, is tied to the 11th house, occupied by Taurus and ruled by Venus.

There aren’t many planets in her 11th house, but Venus definitely has something to say. Angelina Jolie has Venus in Cancer in her 1st house, conjunct that Saturn in detriment. Again, that’s limitation, restriction, hardship, and difficulty tied to the planet representing her third marriage. There’s also a very strong indicator for divorce: her natal Venus is in a very tight square with Uranus. A Uranus-Venus square with that Saturn energy is, to me, a strong signal for turbulence, difficulty, and a marriage that doesn’t last.

So taken together, Angelina Jolie’s chart and Brad Pitt’s chart show that their marriage was very likely to end in divorce, which is what happened.

A Difficult Chart Isn’t a Life Sentence

Just because Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie have these difficulties in their charts doesn’t mean they couldn’t go on to have a long, happy marriage someday. If it’s indicated in their chart, and they pick the right partner, and that partner’s chart supports it, it’s possible. We won’t get into all of that here.

If you want to learn how to understand, predict, and work with this energy in your own chart, my Relationships and Synastry course is 50% off until 5:27 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on November 13th, 2026, right when Venus stations direct.
