Medical Astrology and the Digestive System: Food Sensitivities, IBS, and What Your Birth Chart Shows
Oct 10, 2026I recently asked some of our subscribers a question. If you could wave a magic wand and get an answer to one thing in medical astrology, one thing in your birth chart that’s been bothering you, what would it be?
By far the most common answer was weird, mysterious, hard-to-diagnose illnesses, and digestive issues in particular. I was a little shocked at how many of you told me you’re dealing with problems with your digestion, food sensitivities, all of it. Quite a lot of you.
In medical astrology, there are some very specific signatures, placements, and significations tied to the digestive system in general and to those specific issues so many of you have been experiencing. In this post, I’m going to walk you through the digestive system through the lens of medical astrology, touch on food sensitivities, IBS, and more, and then put it all together with a celebrity chart example so you can see how this works in action.
A Quick but Important Note
I want to be very clear about this. Medical astrology is not a substitute for professional medical advice or other forms of healthcare. It is definitely not used to diagnose, treat, or cure any illness. The information in this post is for educational purposes only. It’s here to pique your curiosity and help you understand how, traditionally, we would look at the connections between your body and the astrology.
Why Medical Astrology Matters
The astrology in our birth chart shows literally every single thing about our experience. It describes our personalities, our likes and dislikes, our strengths and weaknesses. It shows our important relationships, major life themes, career path, and so much more. So why wouldn’t it also correspond with what we’re experiencing physically in our bodies?
One of my favorite things about medical astrology (and this goes deeper than I can cover in one post) is that it shows us how what’s happening in our bodies is connected to everything else in our lives, even when it doesn’t look that way on the surface. You might see digestive issues come up around performance anxiety, or around certain relationships. They might get worse with stress in a very specific area of your life. Medical astrology also shows very clearly how our psychological health, our emotional health, and our past trauma are deeply connected to our physical health.
Everything is connected to everything else, and my favorite way to use medical astrology is to understand those connections. Sometimes by improving a certain area of your life, you see something open up for you health-wise.
If you already have a basic understanding of the natal chart, medical astrology is your next step. I really feel like anyone who studies astrology should study medical astrology, because health is going to come up in your readings whether you want it to or not. Health is part of your clients’ lives and your friends’ and family’s lives. Even if it’s not your area of focus, I feel like astrologers do a disservice to themselves and their clients by not at least understanding the basics. So I’m really glad you’re here doing your homework.
The Astroanatomy of the Digestive System
If you want to understand the connections between what’s happening with your digestion and what you’re seeing in your birth chart, you have to start with astroanatomy: the connections between different body areas and functions and every part of the digestive system.
We’re going to start at the top, where the food goes in, and work our way down through the digestive tract. As we go, I’ll mention common indicators for things like food sensitivities, IBS, digestive issues, nausea, and nervous stomachs.
Taurus: The Mouth, Throat, and the First Stage of Digestion
Most of this first area is ruled by Taurus. Taurus rules the throat and the taste buds, which is why Taurus is so connected to taste and the general sensory experience. Taurus is also tied to the tongue, the saliva glands, and the lower jaw, which is obviously involved in chewing. It rules the esophagus and this whole region where food comes in, gets chewed up and enjoyed, and goes through that very first stage of digestion where saliva and chewing start breaking it down.
Saturn rules the teeth. I feel like a lot of you probably already knew that one. It’s a very common and well-known association.
The Taurus-Scorpio Axis
Something interesting about medical astrology is that body areas tend to run along an axis. Signs of the same modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) often share a pattern in the body areas they represent.
Taurus is a fixed sign, and its opposite sign is Scorpio. What I find really fascinating is that Taurus rules where food comes into the body, and Scorpio rules where it leaves. We’ll get to that at the end, because it’s literally the last part of the process.
The fixed signs in general are all at least loosely tied to the digestive system through what I call, in my courses, a referred influence across modalities. You’ll learn a lot about that in Medical Astrology Foundations.
Cancer and the Moon: The Stomach
After food is chewed and swallowed, it travels down the esophagus and into the stomach. The stomach is basically a muscular bag, a container where food is digested with hydrochloric acid and certain digestive enzymes. This organ is specifically ruled by Cancer.
There’s definitely a connection to the Moon here too, since the Moon rules Cancer. The Moon represents all protective containers and sacs in the body. It also rules bodily fluids, including the hydrochloric acid and digestive secretions you’ll find in the stomach.
Beyond the function of the stomach itself, the Moon represents eating and food choices. It describes our unconscious eating patterns and the kinds of food we like to eat. The foods that make us feel emotionally good, the ones we’re really drawn to, are often signified by the Moon’s placement in the birth chart.
The Moon also rules the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which are connected to the body’s hunger and satiety cues. People who are prone to overeating or who have really strong food cravings often have very specific indicators in their Moon placement that show why, and what that looks like. And the Moon is the seat of the emotions, so emotional eating can definitely be tied to the Moon as well.
The Moon, Food Sensitivities, and IBS
Because the Moon is tied to digestion through Cancer, and because the Moon represents our innate sensitivities, food sensitivities often show up for people with afflicted Moon placements. Afflicted Moon placements are also very common for people with digestive system issues, especially IBS. In fact, Cancer as a sign tends to be very prominent in people who have an IBS diagnosis.
This does not mean that having your Sun, Moon, Rising, or any planets in Cancer causes IBS. It’s not a causation thing, and you cannot diagnose someone based on this pattern or any astrological pattern. What it does mean is that when you look at the charts of many, many people who share the same diagnosis, a lot of them have strong Cancer placements and afflicted Moon energy.
They’ll also very often have afflictions to the asteroid Ceres, which is tied to food allergies and food sensitivities, especially to grains, gluten, and dairy.
So there you go. You’ve already learned a big connection to some of the most common digestive issues people experience.
The Cardinal Signs: Kidneys, Pancreas, and Gallbladder
Beyond Cancer, the cardinal signs in general are very tied in with the digestive system. Part of that is through referred influence. Part of it is that Cancer rules the stomach, and the other cardinal signs rule other key players:
- Libra rules the kidneys, which help eliminate waste products created by the body’s use of protein. Libra also co-rules the pancreas with Virgo.
- Capricorn rules the gallbladder. If you have gallstones or gallbladder issues, Capricorn is a sign you’ll want to look at.
You’ll want to look at Saturn too, especially with gallstones. Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn and has to do with gallbladder function, but it also very literally has to do with stones and things that become solid, calcified, or hardened in the body.
Virgo: The Small Intestine and the Gut Brain
Food exits the stomach through the duodenum, which is ruled by Virgo. Virgo in general is very tied in with the digestive system, so it’s another sign to look at for issues with digestion and absorption. Virgo rules the intestines, especially the small intestine, as well as the enteric nervous system. That’s essentially our gut brain, the part of the nervous system that controls and connects to our intestines.
Virgo also rules the spleen, co-rules the pancreas with Libra, and co-rules the liver with Sagittarius. When I’m looking at birth charts, I tend to find a lot more connection between Virgo and liver issues than between Sagittarius and liver issues. With Sagittarius, it’s often more about things like fat metabolism within the liver. With Virgo, it’s a bit broader.
And if your Virgo planets and Virgo energy are really strong and healthy, your digestion, detoxification, and absorption will tend to be strong and healthy too. You can use all of this to pick out strengths, not only weaknesses.
While Virgo is the primary ruler of the spleen, Saturn also seems to have a very strong connection to it. So Saturn is connected to the teeth, the gallbladder, and the spleen.
Venus, the Pancreas, and Insulin
The pancreas, co-ruled by Virgo and Libra, is also connected to Venus. Whenever we’re looking at the cardinal signs (Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, and Aries), we’re often talking about the endocrine system. The pancreas is an important part of the endocrine system, best known for producing insulin.
Venus rules the function of hormones and the overall balance of the endocrine system. It also rules sugars, insulin, and glucose metabolism in the body. So Venus is often a big consideration, along with Transpluto, when it comes to insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS, and other conditions connected to insulin resistance or insulin issues in general. That’s a pattern we commonly see, and we investigate it very deeply in Medical Astrology Foundations.
The Small Intestine, Revisited
The small intestine is where a lot of digestion and especially nutrient absorption takes place. It’s also an important place to look for people with Crohn’s disease, which affects the small intestine.
What I haven’t mentioned yet is that the intestinal mucosa is ruled by Cancer and connected to the Moon. If there are issues there, those are the areas you’ll want to look at. That makes a lot of sense given the lunar and Cancerian connections I so commonly see with clients who have all sorts of digestive complaints.
Scorpio and Pluto: The Large Intestine
Finally, we have the large intestine, where everything prepares to leave the body. That entire area is ruled by Scorpio.
There’s definitely a connection to Pluto here too. I don’t typically use modern rulerships, but Pluto in medical astrology is very clearly connected with the body’s detoxification systems, and the colon is one of them.
So, as I mentioned earlier, food enters and leaves the body through the Taurus-Scorpio axis.
This is the very basic version of the digestive system. I didn’t go as deep into the anatomy and physiology here as we do in Medical Astrology Foundations, where my husband, who is a registered nurse, teaches all the anatomy and physiology lessons. For the purpose of keeping this simple and more digestible (no pun intended), I chose not to get too far into the weeds. But you have enough now to start connecting what’s happening in your body with where you might want to look in your natal chart.

Chart Example: Cher
Now let’s look at a quick chart example. This is Cher’s chart. If you don’t know who Cher is… how do you not know who Cher is? She’s a singer, songwriter, and performer. She’s very famous, she’s in her 70s now, and she’s still going and still thriving.
Cher also has a history of mysterious chronic health problems. She was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr and chronic fatigue syndrome, I believe in the ’80s, and she has since talked openly about her food sensitivities and her issues with IBS. I felt like her chart would be a really good example of both sensitivities and IBS, because those often go together.
One thing I find really fascinating about IBS, probably because my background is in clinical psychology, is that there’s a high comorbidity between IBS and anxiety. Anxiety and stress tend to make IBS symptoms worse. That was true for Cher. I read one article describing how her symptoms would increase before a performance, which is obviously not what you want when you’re about to go on stage.
Cher manages her IBS through food choices, cutting out foods she doesn’t do well with, like dairy, and through stress-reducing practices like yoga. I think that’s absolutely excellent.
Before We Look: How Illness Patterns Actually Show Up
There are three distinct patterns in Cher’s chart that are very common for people with digestive issues, particularly IBS and food sensitivities. These aren’t the only patterns in her chart, and they aren’t the only patterns connected to this cluster of symptoms.
When you look at a chart to assess illness patterns, it never shows up as just one thing, and no two charts look the same. Certain placements and patterns are more common in people with a particular illness, but typically there are multiple patterns converging at once. There are also environmental influences that make the issue worse, and very specific transits that push things over the edge around the time the illness shows up.
So even if you have every pattern I’m about to describe, that does not mean you have IBS or will have IBS. This is not a diagnostic tool. It’s a tool for seeing the connections that are there when someone already has the diagnosis. For some people these patterns might show up in the body, and for others they might show up in completely different ways.
The three main things we talked about in the astroanatomy section were strong Cancer placements, afflicted Moon placements, and challenging placements of the asteroid Ceres. Cher has all three.
Pattern 1: Cancer Rising and Neptune Square the Ascendant
Cher is a Cancer rising. I’ve found a lot of Cancer Sun and Cancer rising energy in the charts of people with digestive issues, and it seems especially prominent in people with IBS.
She also has Neptune at 6° Libra in a very tight T-square with her Ascendant and Descendant. Her Cancer Ascendant is already going to be more sensitive when it comes to the stomach and the intestinal lining. Neptune, which dissolves everything it touches and makes it more permeable, makes it even more sensitive. You’ll see Neptune implicated very commonly with food sensitivities, and with things like leaky gut, because Neptune rules leakiness.
Anyone with Neptune square or conjunct their Ascendant is prone to being more sensitive to everything they come into contact with, not only through the digestive system. For Cher, with a Cancer Ascendant, digestion is going to be the predominant expression. For someone else it could be the environment and the energies they’re exposed to. You might be more sensitive to other people’s emotional states, to Wi-Fi signals, or to smells in your environment. It really depends on how this shows up in your birth chart and in your own life.
I also talked about Neptune quite a lot in my video on chronic illness in astrology, because it’s very commonly associated with hard-to-diagnose, hard-to-pin-down conditions.
Pattern 2: An Afflicted Moon
The second really prominent energy in Cher’s chart is an afflicted Moon. Her Moon is in its detriment in Capricorn, and it’s in opposition to the malefic planet Saturn. Saturn can bring chronic issues, limitations, restrictions, hardship, and difficulty involving lunar things, and food and digestion are very much lunar things.
Saturn is in Cancer, the Moon’s sign, and the Moon is in Capricorn, Saturn’s sign, and they’re opposing each other. So there’s mutual reception, and I do believe that helps her navigate this a lot more easily. Cher has been vocal about not eating dairy because it’s just not digestible for her. Through smart food choices and paying attention to her body, she’s been able to deal with and overcome a lot of her health issues, including her digestive issues.
The other thing going on with her Moon is that it’s in a T-square with Jupiter, Chiron, and Saturn. Chiron indicates our wounds, vulnerabilities, insecurities, shame, guilt, and past trauma. That makes me wonder about a psychological component, or something tied to her past, that might be connected to this issue too. I’m not saying that’s the case. I don’t know Cher, and I’d need to talk with her and really get into it. But there could definitely be something beyond the physical that’s connected to her dietary restrictions and digestive issues.
Pattern 3: An Afflicted Ceres
The last thing I want to note is Ceres, the asteroid connected to certain food sensitivities, especially grains, gluten, and dairy, which are the very common ones we see these days.
Cher has Ceres in Aquarius in opposition to Mars. Mars is very inflammatory. When we see Mars in the birth chart, we’re looking at pain, inflammation, things being hot or moving too quickly. This opposition is also in a T-square with Mercury, so there could be a nervous system component as well.
What I’m really seeing here is an afflicted Ceres. From my studies and my experience with medical astrology, it’s very common for people with food sensitivities to have some sort of serious affliction to Ceres. For Cher in particular, it looks more like an inflammatory response to eating certain foods, and she’s already said publicly that for her, that’s dairy.
I don’t use a lot of asteroids. I’m not big on throwing a bunch of random stuff all over the chart. I think it’s unnecessary, and you can get a lot more out of keeping it simple. But Ceres does seem to hold a lot of weight with this specific issue and with food issues in general in medical astrology, including things like eating disorders. I have a whole video on Ceres in the birth chart if you want to learn more. The food sensitivity piece is reserved for my Medical Astrology Foundations students, and there’s definitely more to it that isn’t commonly talked about.
Putting It Together
That’s my quick look at Cher’s chart. We could go way deeper into this for many, many hours, but I hope this gives you a good starting point, without overwhelming you, for looking at digestion more holistically and integrating what you’ve learned about the digestive system.
