The Nervous System in Medical Astrology

In the past few years, “nervous system regulation” has become super trendy to talk about on social media.

And, rightfully so!

In an age where chronic stress, over-work, poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle have become the norm… keeping our nervous system healthy and balanced is more important than ever.

Medical astrology shows us that when it comes to nervous system regulation, there's no one-size-fits-all approach.

Some people require more fun, lightness, activity, and PLAY to replenish and re-balance their nervous system; others require seriousness, solitude, and meditation . There are people who would benefit from a heavier focus on food choices and nutrition, while many more should be focusing on improving their sleep.

Why?

We're all unique individuals with a unique combination of genetics, environmental exposures and life experiences.

And, at any given moment, each of us is dealing with a unique blend of internal and external stressors.

Medical astrology shows us exactly what this looks like.

In my latest video, we cover everything you need to know to understand the connections between the nervous system and medical astrology, and I’ll also be sprinkling in some helpful tips along the way.

Side note ▶️ When people talk about "nervous system regulation," typically they're referring to the autonomic nervous system—e.g. the balance between the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-restore).

The autonomic nervous system is primarily what we'll be discussing in this video & blog post.

Medical Astrology Significations for the Nervous System

Mercury—rules the brain, vagus nerve and nervous system in general. Mercury's placement in the signs, houses and in aspect to other planets can give important clues about when you need to keep your autonomic nervous system balanced.

The Moon—rules the limbic system, our "inner reality," and our emotional response to stimuli. The hypothalamus lives here. The Moon's placement shows the health of the “control” center for the sympathetic nervous system, episodic memory function, emotions and emotional memory. Strongly connected to the olfactory centers of the brain as well.

The Mutable Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)—taken as a whole, the mutable signs rule the nervous system in its entirety, with each sign having a more specialized connection to a different portion of the nervous system.

  • Gemini—CNS and Peripheral Nervous System, more generally
  • Virgo—Autonomic Nervous System & Enteric Nervous System
  • Sagittarius—Efferent nervous system, more generally
  • Pisces—The least connected to nervous system… primarily involved via what I like to call “referred influence”

Mars—rules the adrenals and “stress hormones” like cortisol and adrenaline. Mars strongly connects to the sympathetic nervous system and our fight-or-flight response.

The Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)—taken as a whole, the cardinal signs rule the endocrine system in its entirety, with each sign having a more specialized connection to specific endocrine organs. The cardinal signs deal with CRISIS and are strongly connected to the adrenals, which play an important role in the body’s response to stress.

  • Aries—The ADRENALS & has connection to sympathetic nervous system because of this
  • Cancer—Posterior Pituitary Gland (Oxytocin, antidiuretic hormone)
  • Libra—Endocrine system in general
  • Capricorn—Anterior Pituitary Gland (GH, TSH, ACTH, Prolactin, Gonadotrophins)

Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)—an excess of fire in the birth chart can make someone prone to overstimulation across many areas, including the nervous system. A fire deficiency can create understimulation, lack of ambition, and apathy.
